Information Graphics Poster

What was required from the brief, was to make and design a poster that explains either:

1) Principles of Design
2) Elements of Design
3) Typography

I chose to represent principles of design on my poster.

Principles of Design

Elements of design can be thought of as the things that make up the design. There are seven elements of design:

Line - line can be considered in two ways. The linear marks made with pen or brush, or the edge created when two shapes meet.

Shape - a shape is a self-contained defined area of geometric or organic form. A positive shape in a painting automatically creates a negative space/shape.

Direction - All lines have direction. Horizontal shows calmness, stability and tranquility. Vertical shows balance, formality and alertness. Lastly, diagonal shows movement and action.

Texture - texture is the surface quality of a shape, rough/smooth/glossy/soft/hard/etc. Texture can be physically or visually effective.

Colour - also known as CMYK

Value - value is the lightness or darkness o a colour. Value is also called Tone.

The way I decided to show this principle was in the form of a brain. I noticed that there were creative and logic factors about principles of design, therefore this could be shown in the right and left side of the brain. As the right of the brain shows creativity and the left shows logic. When I placed the Principles on the brain, it seemed to complicated and not easy to read. Therefore I was directed to show where each principle was located in the brain.

The Brain
  • Parietal Lobe -> where texture and shape is triggered
  • Cerebrum Lobe -> largest part of the brain (size)
  • Occipital Lobe -> colour
  • Cerebellum -> direction
  • Pineal Gland -> Value
  • Lines -> on the brain

I decided to make the poster background a chalkboard, because it looked like a diagram and made me think of Biology and school. Therefore the brain and explanations were written in white, to represent chalk.

Self-Help Book with Baking

We were instructed to create a Self-help book that would help people with their lives and not to get confused with a Step by Step book that shows you and doesn't help you. I chose to do a baking self-help book, baking for people in your lives. Therefore getting closer to people, through the process of baking. We had to create 5 double pages spreads, cover, back and contents page. For my DPS i chose the following deserts:

  1. Relationship cake - Coffee Souffle *coffee is an aphrodisiac and will get you going for that all nighter. Red is the colour of passion.
  2. Friendship cake - Vanilla Cupcakes *vanilla calms you down and makes you feel comfortable. This is exactly what friends do. Sprinkling the cup cakes can be done with friends as a bonding activity. Yellow is the colour of friendship.
  3. Forgiveness cake - Chocolate Mousse Layer Cake *chocolate makes you feel better, therefore can forgive easier. Blue is the colour of sadness.
  4. Party Shots - Frangelico Mousse shots *Nuts make you energetic for the late night out and the alcohol helps you with confidence to go for the kill. Orange is the colour of energy.
  5. Hang Over Cure - Bloody Mary Shot *Tomatoes are very acidic and help your stomach readjust over the alcohol had taken over. Grey is the colour of gloomy.
My first attempt was to create hand drawn illustrations of the feelings you get from each cake. For relationships I drew the images of passion, kissing, holding hands and flowers.

I put these scans in photoshop and cut through the blank spaces, so that the ingredients needed to make the dessert for that double page spread, would show through the images. This was rejected as it looked to Chinese.

I then started from scratch and overlapped the images above and overlay them in photoshop, to get an effect, which seems as the images are appearing through one another. This was rejected too. I was then directed to a photography based baking book, which seemed like a much more fun idea. After constructing each heading out of food and neatening each grain in photoshop, this quickly changed my mind up about fun.

Final DPS1

Coffee Souffle was written in coffee grinds. There are two forks on the plate to represent a couple in a relationship. The South African ingredients are peeping under the plate, to show you which ingredients are required for his dessert and it makes it have more of a South African feel. I wrote the ingredients in brown, to tie in with the coffee, this also makes them stand out more. The red circle is the chef's tip, which explains why coffee is used.

Final DPS2

Vanilla cupcakes was written in sprinkles. There is a cupcake holder to show what the cupcakes stand on. Each DPS has a different plate for a different theme. I wrote the ingredients in pink to tie in with the cupcakes icing. The chef's tip was written in yellow = friendship.

Final DPS3

Chocolate Mousse Cake was written in cocoa powder. The plate was circular to tie in with the circular cake. The ingredient s were written in brown, to tie in with the chocolate cake. The chef's tip was the colour of blue, for sadness, as it is a forgiveness cake.

Final DPS4

Frangelico Shots was written in Chocolate sauce, this is used to make a Frangelico. The plate was a bar tray, as people will be out in the clubs after drinking this dessert. The writing was written in orange, to tie in with the garnish on the Frangelico shot. The chef's tip was written in orange = energy for the late, insane party ahead.

Final DPS5

Bloody Mary was written in tomatoe sauce, the main ingredient for a Bloody Mary is Allgold tomatoe juice. This cures any hangover. The plate is a toilet seat as that's where one would drink this dessert when feeling terrible and hung over. The writing was written in red to tie in with the Bloody Mary and the Chef's tip was the colour grey, has it is a morrbid colour.

Campaign for Cape Union Mart

This brief we had to go in partners by picking out a hat. Rilee Palmer picked my name, which was awesome :) We could chose between three different brands to make a campaign for:
  1. Cape Union Mart
  2. Wellness Center
  3. Musica
What was asked on the brief, it that we have at least two print ads, one ambient and one alternative. Therefore your concept had to work for a whole different range of advertising. We chose to do Cape Union Mart. The concept we decided on was by using fairy-tales to show that Cape Union Mart had what you need, therefore our message was 'We have what you need'. There was also the feel that Cape Union Mart can help make your dreams come true. How we incorporated the fairy-tales to Cape Union Mart was by giving the story a happy ending by not using obvious products that the brand offers.

Print Advert 1

The first print ad used the fairy-tale of "The Three Little Pigs". The image was of the three pigs sitting inside the Cape Union Mart tent and the wolf howling in the background, looking discontent. Therefore the wolf could not blow down the tent as it was too strong for him, this was the happy ending.

Print Advert 2

The fairy-tale used for the second print advert was of the story, "The Old Lady Who Lived in the Shoe". As the lady has many children living with her, one can imagine how bad the shoe must of smelt. Therefore Cape Union Mart gave her shoe freshener to give her a happy ending.

The illustration style used for both the print adverts was a romantic cartoon look, therefore targeted at adults.

Ambient Advert

The area we placed our ambient was in the Cape Quarter, the section outside on the top floor where all the restaurants are. The Tin Man from "The Yellow Brick Road" was placed in this area. The catch was that he was wearing a raincoat, to make his happy ending that he would never rust. Therefore Cape Union Mart "has what you need". We took a photo of a man wearing a raincoat and photoshopped the Tin Man inside.

Alternative Advert

The fairy-tale that we used for the alternative advert was 'Thumbelina". We placed Thumbelina on the floor of a shopping mall because that is where there are a lot of people walking very frequently. We stuck caution tape around Thumbelina on the floor, so that people could walk in this space but were cautious when doing so. There was a magnifine glass placed on a stand, looking at Thumbelina. Therefore people would not step on her and she would have a happy ending. Cape Union Mart has what you need.

Paper Bag

For this brief we had to make a bag out of triplex paper. This paper is difficult to work with, as it breaks apart if you fold it, therefore you have to score each 'fold'. The bag has to open and close and you must be able to carry it, with the use of a sling. Therefore I decided to go the safe route and layer my bag, not as safe as I thought. This was very time consuming to layer the bag, as the height I wanted took ages to achieve. Here is a video of how the bag was constructed:

The biggest challenge of the bag was making the section where it had to open and close, 'the flap'. Because I had layered it, there was no way for me to combine the flap with the actual bag. I decided to  make another layer of the bag but not making it hollow this time. This would be the flap. How I placed it on the bag was by making folds, almost like hinges, that would connect the flap to the bag.
I used a template to layer my bag continuously, until it reached the wanted height. Half way through making the bag, I had lost the template, which was drawn by hand. As it was a oval, I could not get the exact template again. Not a fun part of the process. I did however manage to make another template by tracing the bag, this was a success :)

Throughout the project I began to form man muscles in my arms, cutting straight through the triplex paper with a craft knife was not easy. It took me three times to cut over the surface until I got through. I had gotten 8 layers out of each A3 piece of triplex paper. I used 9 or 10 pieces of triplex paper for the layers alone. Therefore I must of made around 75 layers. Not as fun and definitely not the easy way out as I had thought.

Packaging

For this brief we were to make a packages for our corporate identities. Packages for different ranges; mild, medium and strong. My first idea was to carry on with my corporate identity and use a coffee cup but show effects of smoking through the packaging.

Smoking makes it harder to breathe because of the carbon dioxide in the nicotine. Therefore I thought about putting a paper bag over the cup. The stronger the coffee the more scrumbled the paper bag. This is to represent the need to breathe and the more the paper bag is scrumbled, the more serious the breathing becomes. Another idea was to show the effects of smoking on the bottom of the coffee cup and then cover it up with a coffee holder, to represent the fact that this tobacco coffee prevents the harmful effects of smoking. The bottom of the cup would get yellower the stronger the coffee, representing the teeth staining effect of smoking.

The second idea was to show stompies lying around on the floor, showing how much littering happens from smoking because people leave their stompies anywhere. The more stompies lying around, the stronger the coffee. Both ideas would be covered up by the coffee holder.

Feedback - not to use a coffee cup as the package, too literal. Try show the mild, medium and strong through the use of a character. Think about using them in reverse, better the character, the stronger the coffee.

This is the character Mr Addict, obviously not smoking because that is what the product is trying to prevent.

I wanted to put the character on the face of the package and have a sticker with it to show what effects of smoking is being prevented with the coffee.

The character would have the following effects of smoking done to him:
  1. Stained teeth
  2. Stained gums
  3. Blood shot eyes, then blindness
  4. Pale skin
  5. Wrinkles on the skin and
  6. Messy hair, to show no self care anymore.
As the character gets worst, so does the symptoms. Feedback - approved but take out the blindness, looks as if I am addressing another issue other than the smoking.

I tried to play around with the bar code but the ideas I had would not be able to work because you cannot scan a bar code with the ideas I had.

Therefore I thought of different packages for my product and chose to package my coffee/tobacco in a cigarette case, to co-inside with my concept. The character on my package would tell the consumers what range the coffee was, except the characters were done in reverse.

Mild Addiction (red shirt)

Mr Addict’s character looked the worst for mild addiction. His eyes were blood shot, teeth stained yellow, gums dark/black red, hair messy and skin wrinkled and yellow pale.  This is because he was smoking too much. The stronger the addiction the more coffee beans are needed.

Medium Addiction (blue shirt)

Mr Addict’s character looked the slightly better than the character for mild addiction. His eyes were semi-blood shot, teeth stained light yellow, gums dark red, hair out of place and skin wrinkling and slightly yellow pale.

Strong Addiction (green shirt)

Mr Addict’s character was the best in strong addiction. He was as healthy as can be; clean, white eyes, no wrinkles, normal skin colour, white and healthy teeth and gums, showed this.

The characters were done in reverse because it is unexpected and goes with the concept the best. The more addicted one is to smoking the higher the need for stronger coffee to help with one’s appearance. Smoking causes the appearance of terrible looking skin, gums and eyes. It can even lead to blindness. Therefore the higher the addiction the more coffee needed.

The packaging contents itself was coffee with a mixture of tobacco, placed in cigarette cases. Therefore when the smoker is craving a smoke, he/she pulls out the cigarette case to make coffee. Two breaks in one. The cigarette case was originally red but I had to spray paint it black to hide the existing branding.

Here is the final design for the label that is going on the package. The name of the coffee is called Nicobean - combining Nicotine and Coffee bean together. There is a sticker on the design that says, "Smoking harms your appearance... Drinking it doesn't. Therefore it shows the effects of smoking through the character Mr Addict. The copy on the back was the ingredients, country of origin and informing the consumers about other ranges of the product.

Ingredients:A blend of Robusta coffee beans and Virginia tobacco to  make smoking coffee, which will feed your medium addiction for that “every once a day” craving.

Country of origin: Robusta coffee beans are grown in Western and Central Africa, throughout Southeast Asia. The Virginia Tobacco is found in Mpumalanga. Both brought to South Africa to produce the finest coffee with a twist.

Extra information: If you need something with more or less of a kick, try our other ranges for your srtrong to mild addictions.

Paper Food Making

I decided to make paper food that I enjoy making the most in real life. Baking is one of my favourite things to do; therefore I chose to make cup cakes. Regretted this decision because it was not as easy as I thought it would be.

I started off with a template for cupcake wrappers, printed out 90 pages with this template on and wrapped them around each other to make the inside of the cupcake.  This took the most time and the least fun. It took me 7 hours to wrap up enough templates to make 3 cupcake insides.

Template

Next was the actual “dough’ to go around the cupcake inner. This was a vanilla colour because vanilla cupcakes taste and are the best. This was tricky to make the base and top for the cupcake, without having the paper edges being seen, especially because it was not a perfectly round cupcake, more like an oval. Didn’t think this one though. I used the template for this as well.

My favourite part was the actual cupcake wrapper. I could be decorative with this. I used a flowery, cotton black paper, with a shiny feel to it. Around this a placed a flowery cut out from a dolly used for teatime. I think it looked really elegant at the end. For the icing I used pink wax paper and crumbled it up to make icing for the top.

Feedback

ICING REJECTED. Had to start the entire food making over from scratch because the icing was stuck to my cupcakes and had to be ripped off. Did not leave me in the best of moods.

The second attempt

I made flatter icing (pink again J) out of tissue paper. This was tricky at first but I got the hang of it. For the finishing touch I made blue, yellow and green sprinkles.  It was finally finished. Luckily I had redone the box twice myself because I did not like it, therefore I could chose between a triangle or square box. The triangular box looked the best but was not scored properly, so I went with the square box. I used templates for these too.

Graphic Identity and Packaging

The brief indicated that we research three out of the six given services:
  • Dentist
  • Male Stripper
  • Chocolatier
  • Dairy Farmer
  • Coffee barista
  • Massage therapist
I chose the four, that has the green font above. What understanding I found from researching the four services.

    Dentist

A cosmetic dentist that can give you vampire fangs that are permanent. There are real vampire clans in America that bite one another and drink their blood, this is called the 'Love Bite'. How teenagers are showing possession and affection through biting. The movie series, 'Twilight', has been the major influence of this craze. Therefore a dentist for vampires, insight is that the dentist can make your dreams come true.

    Business Card

    Shows the business card vertical,
to represent a neck. There are bite
    marks on the neck, showing
    acceptance into the vampire clan
and being aloud to join the
    vampire dentistry.
    Symbol of a vampire
    Letterhead

The punch hole have been replaced
    with bite marks.
    Vampire Bites
    Love Bite

The image of acceptance into a vampire clan.

    Male Stripper

A male stripper targeted at grannies, insight of taking them back in time to the historical highlights of their childhood. Letting the grannies remember the fun times of their lives and to make them feel young again. Therefore a Time Traveling stripper.

    Time Travelling Stripper

The faces are just images of noses and glasses, forming the image of male's genitals. The hairstyles are of an afro (dico ere), long hair with a cigarette (hippie ere) and a space helmet (landing on the moon. Therefore taking the granny back into historical ere's.
    Dairy Farmer

Milk is found is cosmetic products, such as hand cream/body lotion. It protects and keeps your skin smooth, with a fair complexion. Therefore a dairy farmer that gives his milk to cosmetic factories, to make the milk included cosmetic products.

    Coffee Barista

People have a coffee break when working, but also have a smoke break. Therefore have  coffee that is targeted at smokers, saving them time. A coffee that allows you to have a smoke break and a coffee break at the same time.
    Business Card

The front of the business card shows coffee
being poured from a coffee machine. On the
back of the business cards it shows the coffee
continuing to be poured but with tobacco
being sprinkled in. The secret ingredient to
    the cup of coffee.

    Business Card

The front of the business card shows
the steps to making coffee but with
    tobacco being added in, therefore
showing the process but with the
    special ingredient,
    Envelope 2

The envelope is shown from the back, the view of the sealed section. The envelope needs to be licked to be sealed. There is an image of a hand rolled cigarette, which is overlapping the sealed section of the envelope. This indicates that both the envelope and the cigarette need to be licked to be sealed
    Envelope

This shows the envelope from the front. The see-through section where the  information is normally displayed about who the envelope is addressed to, has an image of tobacco and coffee beans. This is to represent the idea of the 'stash' of tobacco and coffee beans because when one rolls their own cigarette, the tobacco is kept in a 'stash'.
    Fax

There is a coffee spillage mark on the fax but with tobacco in the spillage as well, showing what else was put in the coffee.
    Letterhead

The lines in the letterhead have been
    replaced with rows of coffee
    beans and tobacco. When one
    rolls their own cigarettes, the
tobacco is placed in a neat line.
    Logo

The logo is of a take away cup, as the customers
will be in a rush as and need coffee quick
because they are on their break. The hole where
coffee is drunken out of, shows a upside down
cigarette place in the hole. Therefore one
can drink and smoke at the same time

    Compliment slip

The words "with compliments" has been written is smoke because smoke is a sign of relief when smoking and drinking coffee. The satisfaction of smoking and drinking coffee. Therefore intertwining the coffee and cigarette smoke, to show that one can get relief from both the coffee and cigarettes in one.

    Compliment slip 2

This has the same concept to the first compliment slip but shown in a different way.

    Feedback

Previous concepts rejected, except for logo. Start over.

    Mr Addict

Coffee barista targeted at smokers, who want to accommodate others who don't smoke. Therefore playing with the idea that smoking that smoking harms others around you, starts fires, has a bad odor, stains your teeth and contains tar.Where as drinking it doesn't. Coffee that has the same effect as smoking, by using the ingredient of tobacco in the coffee.

    FINAL

    Business card

The cigarettes hold the details about the coffee barista, that one can remove from the package (cigarette box).  The front has the logo of Mr Addict, which is a coffee cup with a cigarette coming out of it. The back has a sticker with the words "Smoking harms others around you... but drinking it doesn't"

Letterhead"Smoking causes fires.. drinking it doesn't".

    Fax

The fax has the words "Smoking contains tar... but drinking it doesn't" on it. This is represented by the black on the fax (the tar) and the white empty space represents the cleanliness of your lungs.

Envelope- The Words "smoking stains your teeth" is written in the inside if the envelope, on top of the colour yellow. The rest of the envelope is white, the colour your teeth would be if one did not smoke.

Compliment slip - On the black sticker on the front, has the words "Smoking has a bad odor... but drinking it doesn't. The compliment slip smells like a cigarette.

Therefore in each corporate identity, an element is used to portray a cigarette and the negative aspects. Drinking the tobacco coffee has many benefits and with the same effect as a normal cigarette.
